Mokuho’oniki Rock: home of the hammerhead sharks. Or so they say. We did not see any today, but we had great dives anyway. I went on Lahaina Diver’s boat, Dominion, with Kasey, Brian and JT. They were all excellent and made for a very enjoyable day.
It was my first time diving at this site, after many failed attempts (bad weather and/or broken boats). I always love diving a new spot, especially one that does not have divers on it every single day like Molokini (which is still a great dive, despite that).
We did 2 dives today: The first at a site called Fish Rain, and the second was a dive called Elephant Run, where you drift between the two tiny islets that make up Mokuho’oniki Rock. Apparently this dive can only be done when there is a south current, which is unusual at this site. But a south current also means less chance of the hammerheads, which proved true today. In lieu of hammerheads, we did see a large pod of Spinner Dolphins, which also keep the hammerheads away. So double whammy for the hammerheads today, but yeah for dolphins!
The dolphins did not come close enough for decent pictures, but I uploaded the shots anyway because they at least give an idea of the size of the pod. In the first 2 dolphin shots, you can just barely see a large group of dolphins heading straight for the surface in the background, behind the closer dolphin shadows in the foreground. The second two shots the dolphins did get a bit closer, so you can start to see the coloration and identify them as Spinner Dolphins.
Fish Rain:
We got to see the dolphins between dives as well:
Elephant Run:
And one last tale to tell:
Today I used the SportDiver housing for my iPhone 12 Pro again, with both the SeaDragon 2500F and the Sola 2000F lights.
