This was my first time visiting the Carthaginian since it was moved from its above water spot in Lahaina Harbor, to its underwater graveyard 100 feet deep.
I went on the Maui Diamond again, and once again the captain and crew were fantastic. I highly recommend this dive operation.
We didn’t get much bottom time on the Carthaginian due to its depth and lack of a multi-level profile, so didn’t get much in the way of pictures. I did catch a white tip reef shark, but was not able to get a shot of the school of 3 spotted eagle rays that swam by at the beginning of the dive.
This was my 2nd time diving Mala Ramp. The first time was shortly before my safari trip when I went on a 2 tank shore dive with Maui Diving in Lahaina. It’s a long walk over rough ground to dive this site from shore, but worth it. It is a great dive, always turtles and almost always sharks. I much prefer it from a boat for ease of access.
There was no shortage of sharks or turtles on this day, plus a frog fish, peacock flounder, octopus, and whitemouth moray eel as bonuses. You can really see why it is called a whitemouth moray in the pictures below.
For the record, these pictures were taken with the SeaLife Micro 3.0 camera with the Sea Dragon 2500F light, perhaps supplemented with a Sola 2000 S/F hand light. On this dive I used either the closeup lens (6″-24″), the wide angle dome lens (3″-inf.), or the built-in lens (15″-inf.).
